Harvest Italian style

Following our Harvest service in church on Thursday we were excited to go back to class and learn a little bit about some of the foods that Italians are grateful for. The children were given the opportunity to taste olives and pasta.  We also learned how olives are harvested.  Ask your child to tell you more about it.

In maths we have been learning to round numbers to the nearest 100.  Look at the tens digit to decide whether it rounds up or down.  Give your child some 3-digit numbers to round to the closest multiple of 100. Most children have grasped this now but a bit of revision is always helpful.  We have now started to count on and back in multiples of 1000.  We will continue this next week whilst thinking about the value of each digit.

In English we have been learning about metaphors.  Ask your child to explain these metaphors: 'My mum is a rock' or 'My brother is a monkey.' A metaphor is saying one thing is another to show the similarities. We talked about how poets and musicians often use this language to express meaning and make the writing more interesting. We finished our kennings poems.   Next week we start a block of story writing. We will be thinking of adventure stories.

Thank you for those of you who have a regular routine of enjoying a book together at home. Remember that reading to your child, especially if they find reading difficult, is just as important.  Lots of discussion is vital to explain meaning and to deepen their thinking and responses to a text.

We have launched our class Multiplication check system in a big way in class this week. We are checking each table in turn, starting with some of the less challenging ones such as 2x table and 5x table.  The key is can your child tell you the answer within 4 seconds and when you mix the questions up in any order. Children who are struggling are being given a few minutes (when we get a chance as each school day is super packed!) to go on the computer to practise. I have shown them a few great programs within the Topmarks site which is free to use if you have access to the internet. Please try and make this one of the priorities to support your child alongside their reading development.

We are having a class pencil case ban for one week next week.  I love to see the children excited about coming to school using their own pens etc, however, they have caused a few distractions this week so we are having a pencil case free zone next week. Don't worry your child is provided with everything they need for each lesson.

A little plea on PE days please....can you remove earrings for that day and leave them at home.  Taping them up isn't ideal and is reserved for those children who have recently had their ears pierced.  It is not the norm. Thank you.

Have a great weekend.  This week's secret word is Boudica (please note variations on the spelling of her name exist).
